A lonely soldier boy needed a pen pal. His buddy had a sister at home that had agreed to exchange letters with him. David wrote Shirley a friendly little letter and Shirley was intrigued. For two years these letters crossed the ocean between Germany and Alabama. They learned so much about each other and had a lot in common. David finally got leave and came home to meet Shirley. They were able to visit the whole weekend, David staying at a cousin's house and spending the days with Shirley. Parting was so hard. Another year passed before they would see each other again. But this time there were plans to be married and that happened on July 11th, 1968.Shirley returned to Germany with David and had two more years of a long honeymoon before they would return to the USA. They traveled all over Europe and learned the land as well as each other. Finally in August 1970 they returned to Alabama to establish their permanent home. David worked as a brick mason for a year or so while going to aviation school at night. When his employer became ill, he started working as a cabinet maker. He had found his calling. In 1972 their first child was born. A precious baby boy they named Christopher Michael. With the addition of a baby more money was needed to support his family. After the urging of his mom and wife he started his own cabinet shop. Established in 1976, in Alabaster Alabama, it was named after him and his wife, D&S Cabinets. In 1980 a beautiful baby girl joined the family. Tami Elizabeth Lyn entered this world January 18, 1980. She was her daddy's pride and joy. Her brother, being 7 years older, was her biggest protector. Life was good! Hard work and family was his constant focus. In 1993, after suffering from a few medical issues related to stress he decided to retire the cabinet shop and move to the country. He moved to Eutaw, Alabama and did a lot of deer hunting. He worked at a trucking company delivering packages. One day he got a call from his son that he wanted to move to Eutaw and restart a cabinet shop. Eutaw Custom Cabinets was established in 1994. Over time, it has now expanded to become Eutaw Custom Cabinets & Construction. Over the next years his children were married and four beautiful grandchildren became his new love. He retired a few years ago but was always helping at the shop. He lived a full, happy life with loving wife and children by his side. He loved his church, First Baptist Church of Clinton, where he was deacon for many years.
