Doris Day was like dynamite; she carried the power of courage, strength and determination in a small package. Hers was not an easy life and rather than speak of the difficulties she faced, I will just say she was an over-comer. She earned her High School diploma with a GED and went on to serve as a secretary at DCH Regional Medical Center for many years before she retired. She loved those dear to her passionately and would make any sacrifice of time, money, or talent to help them. So many lives have been touched by her cooking and needlework. Quilts, wall hangings, and pillows are treasures that bless many homes. Every stitch was made with love. It was one of the last things that was stolen from her by a thief called dementia. She fought it with courage. One thing that it could not steal was her faith. Even to the very end she loved the Word of God, beautiful hymns, and the name of Jesus. We rejoice that she has stepped from the suffering and pain into the Lord’s glorious presence. There are not enough words to express our appreciation for the caregivers at Aliceville Manor Nursing Home who loved her. Our special appreciation to Mary Bonner who we consider a gift of God who touched her life so compassionately.
Pallbearers will be Great-Grandsons Cameron Harvey, Mason Harvey, Greyson Graves, Lane Gordon, Caleb Hughes, Liam Hammonds, and Samuel Kelley. Honorary Pallbearers: Member of New Life Outreach Church, and Caregivers of Aliceville Manor Nursing Home.
In the moments of clarity, even in the last month, Doris spoke of her concern for and desire to provide care for children in need. She faithfully gave to the New Life Children’s Home in Guatemala. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting financial gifts be made in her honor to the Children’s Home. Checks may be made to NLCH and sent to
