Dorothy T. Smith

NORTHPORT - Dorothy "Dot" Thorpe Smith, age 91, of Northport, Ala., died on March 10, 2018 at Pine Valley. Services will be held Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mark United Methodist Church, where Mrs. Smith was a charter member. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Brother John Drawhorn and Dr. Mark Lacey will officiate the service. A private family interment will take place earlier in the day at Memory Hill Gardens. Mrs. Smith was born in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of twelve, she moved to Tuscaloosa, Ala. with her family. She graduated from Tuscaloosa High School and received her baccalaureate degree from The University of Alabama. She married her husband, Charles, in 1949. She remained at home rearing their three sons until 1967 when she went to work at Bryce Hospital. She served as a Social Worker for eight years and then established The Department of Community Relations. She served as the director of Community Relations and Volunteer Services for eight years. During this time she was responsible for Operation Santa Claus. She also planned and coordinated many special events involving members of the community as well as employees of Bryce Hospital. Throughout her life her favorite times were those spent with her family, first with her sons and their wives and then as the family grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and made trips to all fifty states, the Provinces of Canada and several European tours. She particularly enjoyed playing bridge with her "bridge buddies" throughout the years. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Walt, Jr., Alex King, Chas Smith, Matt Smith, Robert Smith, Ryan Smith and family friends, Hugh Kilpatrick and Bob Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be her many bridge friends, members of the Adult Fellowship and McCollum Sunday School classes at St. Mark United Methodist Church and special friends, Jeff and Holly Koeppe. She will be greatly missed and remembered as someone who loved her family and always put their needs ahead of her own. She was a wonderful example of a loving, caring mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and friend.
