career at Colgate University. He joined the University of Alabama’s American Studies department in 1998, where he spent the remainder of his career. At the time of his death, Edward was the Chair of American Studies, a post he had held since 2018.
Edward’s scholarly interests ranged from famous Americans of various stripes—from P. T. Barnum to Harriet
Beecher Stowe—to Asian American arts and Japanese American internment. He was especially invested in understanding Americans’ experiences in postwar periods, and this interest gave rise to his book, From Confinement to Containment: Japanese/American Arts during the Early Cold War (2019).
Unstintingly generous with his time, resources, and sage advice, Edward was unceasingly supportive of his
students and colleagues. Countless alumni, faculty members, administrators, and staff members admired and
appreciated Edward for his leadership skills, kindness, good humor, and collegiality. Predeceased by his father, Sam Tang, mother, Bessie Tang, and brother, Andrew Tang, Edward is survived by his
nephew, Brendan Tang of Massachusetts, Brendan’s mother Diane Swift, and many friends. Edward was a kind, generous, and decent man with a blazing intellect and a quick sense of humor. He selflessly nursed his father and mother through their final illnesses, mentored countless students, and touched the lives of
all who knew him. Throughout his sudden and difficult final illness, he kept his great wit and indomitable spirit and remained a kind,
patient, and thoughtful uncle and friend. He was loved beyond words by many who were lucky enough to know
him and will be affectionately remembered and deeply missed.
