Graveside Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2020, in Memory Hill Gardens in Tuscaloosa, Ala. with Rev. Gene Dockery officiating and Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents, William Elijah and Rhodia Mae Miles Howell; brothers, Cecil, Robert, Raymond, Milton, and Johnnie; sisters, Leni Fields and Louise Leonard; and granddaughter, Brittany Nichole Howell.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy; daughter, Laney Kennedy (Clay); son, Chris Howell (Randi); grandchildren, Jamie Kennedy, Erin Kennedy, and Hannah Howell; step-grandsons, Dakota Tapp and Tyler Donnovan; beloved sisters-in-law, Jewelene Collins and Doris Howell; and very loved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Leon finished school at Holt High School. He then joined the Navy and served in Vietnam. After Naval discharge, he completed a four-year machinist apprenticeship. He worked in a coal mine for a time, but until retirement, he worked as a machinist and in supervision.
In 1963, he met Judith Carolyn Holley and they wed on December 24, 1965. They went on to have two children, Christopher Leon and Carolyn Laney.
After retirement, he spent his time fishing in his beloved boat, later traveling and gardening.
