

COTTONDALE – Eula Oneal (Johnson) Smithson, age 86, of Cottondale, Ala., died September 17, 2017, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Springer officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James D. Smithson; sons, Dudley Smithson and Don Smithson; parents, Major and Venola Johnson; brother, Gussie Johnson; and sisters, Inez Johnson, Peggy Joe Madison and Ann Johnson.
Survivors include her daughter, Joan Jackson (John); sisters, Ernestine Peeples, Addie "Bobbie" Smithson (Morris), Everlena Davis, Clara Weaver (Parker), Brenda Kay Glover (Larry), Glenda Fay Corley (Willard) and Janice Wedgeworth (Grover); grandchildren, Wendy Barger (Tommy), Tres Jackson (Tara), Bryant Jackson, Jared Jackson, Melinda Lollar (Phillip), Trip Smithson (Britni), Reba Lamb (Kenneth) and Major Smithson; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Neal attended Hale County High School and retired from Sears. She was a devout Christian and preacher's wife. She and James celebrated sixty years of marriage before his passing in 2010.
She devoted her whole life to taking care of others. Her greatest joys in life were family and gardening. She loved planting flowers and could make anything grow.
Pallbearers will be Bryant Jackson, Jared Jackson, Trip Smithson, Major Smithson, Christopher Barger and Phillip Lollar.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Leonard Jones, Hospice of West Alabama, and the members of Rosedale Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.
