

Frederick Doyle Sturdivant, age 85, of Northport, died February 21, 2012, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 2 PM Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Jonathan Ivy officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Friday, February 24, 2012 from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol McSwain; his sister, Mavis Turner; and his brother, Floyd "Tommy" Sturdivant.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia M. Sturdivant; his former wife, Laura Colbert; his daughter, Sherry Kornegay; his sons, Dennis Sturdivant, David Sturdivant (Pam), Dana Sturdivant (Ann-Marie), Ralph Kornegay, and Jeff Kornegay; his sisters, Edith Turner and Nell Hughes; his brothers, Benny Sturdivant and Paul Sturdivant; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Fred was born at home in Pickens County on March 2, 1926. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. He fought in the battle for Iwo Jima, where he was wounded, and was later awarded the Purple Heart.
Pawpaw will be remembered for his remarkable kindness. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew him. Pawpaw told his family that he was "ready to meet that old man," referring to his Heavenly Father. We are comforted knowing that Pawpaw is no longer suffering and is at peace.
Pallbearers will be Adam Sturdivant, Joshua Sturdivant, John Sturdivant, Matthew Sturdivant, Kevin Kornegay, Eric Kornegay, Jeremy Price, and Bradley Price.
