Gladys Davis

Gladys Potts Davis, age 95, of Tuscaloosa, died Jan. 14, 2011, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Corder and Rev. Tommy Smothers officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester E. Potts, Sr. and Leona Basinger Potts; her beloved aunt, Inez Basinger; and her brothers, Lester E. Potts, Jr. and Wayne Potts.

Survivors include her husband, James B. Davis; a child, Larry Davis (Pat); a grandchild, Michael Davis (Merry Anne); two great-grandchildren, Christy Davis Hallman (Matt) and Jay Davis; one great-great-grandchild, Jayse Hallman; and two sisters, Dorothy Potts Bennett and Frances Potts.

Gladys Potts Davis was born in Ethelsville, Ala. on Nov. 1, 1915. She grew up and lived in Tuscaloosa working with her husband of 74 years, J.B. Davis, to establish a grocery store in Alberta City. Later she worked in the office of Piggly Wiggly Corporation.

She was very active in Alberta Baptist Church. She served on various committees including: past director of Alberta Baptist Women's Missionary Union, past director of the Tuscaloosa Associational Women's Missionary Union, past department director of Sunday school, and Training Union.

She was a graduate of Holt High School and was past president of Holt PTA.

She didn't let bad health stop her from working for her Lord. She ministered to others with encouraging words and prayers. She was a tremendous prayer warrior and was faithful to her calling of serving others.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Johnston, Gary Lumpkin, Randy Davis, James Nance, Paul T. Davis, Doug Brown, Brett Shewmake, and John Matthews.

Honorary pallbearers are Paul Davis, Ed Davis, Hebert Davis, Spurgeon Davis, John L. Basinger, Hugh Basinger, Donnie Hallman, Bill Strickland, Dr. Daniel Potts, Dr. Steve Lovelady, Bama Partners Care Givers, Sandy Reed, Ashley Bobo, Bertha Holifield, Marsha Patterson, Beverly Fields, Lakeshia Scott, Yolanda Davis, Athelda Potts, Sarah Ruth Finney, Lois Lawrence, Hospice of West Alabama, DCH Regional Medical Center fourth floor, and members of Alberta Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alberta Baptist Church and Hospice of West Alabama.
