Grace Lamon gained her angel wings on March 5, 2022. Those of us who knew and loved her understood this to be just a formality. She was already an angel to us. Mom was born and grew up on a farm in the Tabernacle Community of rural Bibb County where she picked cotton and helped take care of her four siblings. She graduated from Bibb County High School in 1944 after 12 years of perfect attendance. She was the valedictorian and graduated at the age of 16. She attended Athens College in Athens, Alabama where she met and married Roy, the love of her life for the next 71 years.
Mom worked for 40 years in the personnel department at B. F. Goodrich and then enjoyed a little retirement gig at Parisian/Belk that lasted 17 years. One of her proudest accomplishments was teaching children in Sunday School and singing in the choir at Forest Lake Baptist Church where she was a member for 67 years. She never missed an opportunity to bake a caramel cake or prepare a meal for someone who was sick or hurting. Mom loved a cold Dr. Pepper and reminded us often that she used to buy them for a nickel.
Grace Lamon was born in 1927 to Samuel and Ruth Hicks and is survived by her only sister, Iris Crocker and one brother, Gordon Hicks. In addition to Roy, she was predeceased by brothers Olan Hicks and Preston Hicks.
She is survived by her four children, Mike Lamon (Lynda), Dwain Lamon (Denise), Steve Lamon (Gloria), and Joy Burroughs, (Mike). Mom is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Robin Cole (Lewis), Kenneth Lamon (April), Lindsey Greene (David), Christopher Lamon (Sheena), Jenny Pass (Dave), Britain Hawkins (Fletcher), Mary Dearman (David), Katy Jaramillo (Sam), Lauren Posey (Neal), Kara Chanko (Daniel), and Airman Montez Bell. Seventeen great-grandchildren include Liza Grace, Ford, Louise, Carter, Juniper, Allie, Alaina, Steven, Charlotte, Magy, Rory, Joey, Nora, Evan, Rhys, Vivian, and Emerson.
Funeral services are planned for 3:00 pm, Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Donald Payne presiding with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, A Dignity Memorial Provider directing. Interment will follow at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. The family will receive guests for one hour prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Mark White, Kyle Powell, Winston Crocker, Bill Elliot, Sam Hicks, and Kenneth Lamon.
Honorary pallbearers include members of Forest Lake Baptist Church, retirees of B. F. Goodrich, and her friends at Parisian/Belk Department Store.
In lieu of flowers, mom would most appreciate a donation to her favorite charity, Wings of Grace, which is run by her beloved church, Forest Lake Baptist.
The family requests attendees at the service to please wear a mask.
