Henry was the first child born to Henry C. and Nancy M. Boyd. He grew up in Peterson, AL in a community full of extended family. He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force on April 11, 1952 at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged on March 1, 1956, just before his 21st birthday. After his service, he returned to Tuscaloosa and briefly attended the University of Alabama. Over the next several years, he worked at Hayes Aircraft in Birmingham, AL, Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL, and Central Foundry in Holt, AL. He owned/operated a service station in Cottondale for a period. Henry was married to Linda Ann Toxey on July 25, 1959. They lived in the Tuscaloosa area until 1965 when they moved to the Coaling area on Highway 11. Henry later owned/operated a “Pure” service station at the intersection of Hargrove and Kicker Roads in Tuscaloosa, AL. Because of his success in the tire business, he was able to open his own wholesale tire distribution business, known as “Boyd Wholesale Tire” which he operated out of their garage. In 1976, he constructed the “store”, near their home on Highway 11, that would ultimately host a tire and hardware store for many years---affectionately known as “Boyd Super Store”.
Henry was a faithful member of Evergreen Baptist Church for approximately 50 years. He served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and assisted with various building and expansion projects of the church. Health issues necessitated Henry’s and Linda’s relocation from the local community in 2018. Henry often said in his later years that his greatest treasure was his children and grandchildren.
