
Irene S. Simmons, age 89, of Northport, died Oct. 25, 2011, at Forest Manor Nursing Home. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Memory Hill Gardens with Dr. John Nixon officiating and Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie J. “Bill” Simmons; her parents, Thomas and Minnie Savage; her brothers, Oliver, Wilber, and Milton Savage; and her sister, Earline Vinston.
Survivors include her sons, James Simmons (Deloris) of Northport, Robert Simmons (Faye) and Tommy Simmons, both of Tuscaloosa, Harry Simmons (Brenda) of Meridian, Miss., and Bill Simmons (Monica) of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mama Simmons was a devoted wife and mother. She lived on 18th Street in Northport for 61 years.
Honorary pallbearers are Pauline Summerlin, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Shirley, Lester and Carla Edwards, Northport Baptist Church, Trailblazers of Northport Baptist Church, staff and residents of Presbyterian Apartments, staff and residents of Forest Manor Nursing Home, Dr. G. Stewart, Dr. Michael Johnson, Dr. James Robinson, and Retired Col. Tom Phillips and family.
