
James Otis Burroughs, age 89, of Tuscaloosa, died April 15, 2012, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Donald Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertha Malone and Thomas Roy Burroughs; and brothers, Edison and Herbert Burroughs.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Prewitt Burroughs; daughters, Toni Welbourne of Tuscaloosa and Linda Jones and son-in-law, Clinton Jones of Houston, Texas; grandson, Bryant Welbourne of Oklahoma City, Okla.; brother, Morris Burroughs (Mary); sister-in-law, Laura Hollingshead; and brother-in-law, Shot Sherrill.
He was born in Tuscaloosa County Sept. 19, 1922. He attended the University of Alabama and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was manager of the engineering department at BF Goodrich and retired after 35 years. He was a longtime member of Forest Lake Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. After retirement he was an avid vegetable gardener and attended Alabama football games until he was 85.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Tommy Burroughs; Roy Burroughs; Gordon Montgomery; Donald, George and Woodrow Prewitt; Wayne, Bob, and Joe Prewitt; Bobby and Gary Sherrill; and Chuck and John Hollingshead.
Honorary pallbearers are Roy and Grace Lamon, Bill and Elenor Shell, Ann Dockins, Jerry and Randy Coleman, members of Forest Lake Baptist Church, and retired BF Goodrich employees.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Forest Lake Baptist Church Building Fund.
