James Morris Prater Sr.

James Morris Prater, Sr., age 90, of Cottondale, died August 11, 2015, at home. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, with Clark Sims and Junior Latner officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the funeral home.He was preceded in death by his parents, Sardis and Rosa Lee Prater; brothers, Coy, Richard and Landon; sisters, Laverne Lancaster and Loventrice Davis; and grandson, Michael James Griffin.Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Patterson Prater of Cottondale, Ala; daughter, Cathy Prater Griffin of Cottondale, Ala.; son, Dr. James Prater, Jr. (Dr. Joyce Steele) of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; sisters, Lavelle Styres of Northport, Ala., Lydia Maglietta of San Diego, Calif. and Banks Perkins (Garey) of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; grandchildren, Maria Reach (Brian), Vanessa Toler, Dr. Jason Prater (Angela) and Jameson Prater (Brianne); great-grandchildren, Brady, Brianne and Jacob Toler, Houston and Sarah Prater, and Ayden Grace and Ally Anne Prater; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Vernon, Ala. on July 10, 1925 and died at home on August 11, 2015. He served two years in the United State Navy and retired from BF Goodrich.James was a member of Cottondale Church of Christ where he served as Elder for many years. Daddy loved God and served him faithfully. He generously shared the bounty of his garden.Pallbearers will be Vince Parker, Dupree Galoway, Ernie Kimbrell, Brent Mingle, Jay Palmer, Wade Duncan, Bert Sims, David Harbin, Glen Milligan, and Mark Waldrop.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of West Alabama.
