

Johnny A. Dyer, age 74 of Tuscaloosa, Alabama passed away on December 24, 2024 at DCH Regional Medical Center. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Northport Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m., with Bro. Patrick Cooley officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens.
Johnny was preceded in death by his father, Abner Dyer; mother, Ethel Lockman Dyer; brothers, Jimmy Dyer, David Dyer, Donald Killian, Danny Killian; sisters, Peggy Killian Simpson, Jane Killian.
He is survived by his sister, Patricia "Patsy" Killian Wright Meeks; special friend, Penny Davis and his nieces.
Johnny spent his professional life in service to others. Upon graduation from Northside High School, Johnny joined the Air Force. While serving in Vietnam he was wounded and exposed to Agent Orange. His exposure to Agent Orange ultimately led to his death. After the completion of his military duty, he returned to Tuscaloosa and began his career in law enforcement. He served first with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Department and then became a Forensic Investigator with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Upon his retirement he became very active in the Alabama Private Investigators Association.
Johnny was very well respected by his peers in law enforcement. At the beginning of his career, he was selected as an officer in his basic academy class. He was honored by being selected as the 1985 Tuscaloosa County “Law Enforcement Officer of the Year”. In 2024, he received the “Investigator of the Year” award by the Alabama Private Investigators Association.
He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1985, majoring in Criminal Justice. To enhance his law enforcement skills, he continued his education and received basic and advanced certificates in over 25 specialized fields of law enforcement.
Johnny was very active in several churches in Tuscaloosa and demonstrated a keen interest in understanding the Bible. He was also very active in the Northside Lion’s Club upon his retirement. He cherished his lifetime friendships with his classmates from Northside High School, especially his teammates with whom he played football and baseball. He enjoyed bringing laughter to his friends and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Ron Davis, Richard Dyer, Eldon Willingham, Gary Mims, Wally Gilliam, David Hill.
Honorary Pallbearers are Billy Snyder, Alina Stevens, Patsy DeLauro, Members of Northside Lions Club, Employees of Tuscaloosa County Sheriffs Department, Employees of Alabama Department of Forensic Science.
