Lloyd Chanders Garrison Jr.
Lloyd Chanders Garrison, Jr., 78, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away peacefully on January 7, 2019 after a brief illness. Lloyd, known as 'Brother' to his family, and 'GP' to his grandkids was born in Jasper, Alabama on August 10, 1940 to Edith and Lloyd Chanders Garrison, Sr., and was one of seven siblings. Growing up in Tuscaloosa, Lloyd attended The University of Alabama and later began a career in the clothing industry. His career took him to Huntsville, Alabama in 1965, where he began working with The Belk Company. In the 1980s, he owned his own clothing retail business in Huntsville and also became a real estate investor. He lived in Huntsville for over 50 years and loved his city with all his heart. He was active in his community and an avid supporter of UAH athletics. He was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church and he adored his church family and fellow Sunday school class members. He spent many days and holidays caring for those in need, providing food and assistance for those unable to leave home. He was a gentle, generous and kind man with a magnificent sense of humor and a heart of gold. His best friends, who he referred to as 'his people' were among his greatest treasures in life. He was a wonderful grandfather, 'GP' to his beloved grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Chanders Garrison, Sr., and Edith Anderson Garrison; brother, Joseph Sterling Garrison; and sisters, Martha Garrison Jackson and Elizabeth Garrison Leatherwood.
He is survived by his son, Lloyd Chanders 'Chan' Garrison III and wife, Lisa, of Mobile; his beloved grandsons, Will and Robert; sisters, Katherine Garrison Self of Birmingham, and Sarah Garrison Sullivan of Tuscaloosa, and Elaine Garrison Newman of Orlando, Fla.; and many adoring nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Whitesburg Baptist Church South Campus, Huntsville, Alabama on Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 10 to 11 a.m., with the funeral service to follow at 11. There will be a memorial service in Tuscaloosa at the Heritage Chapel on Old Birmingham Highway on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Whitesburg Baptist Church or The University of Alabama Huntsville athletic department.
