Luci Amason was born in Abingdon, VA, the daughter of Allie Baldwin Kreger, Sr. and Lucy Metz Rice Kreger. She grew up with her older brother, Al Kreger, Jr., in Roanoke, VA and attended Mary Baldwin College, graduating from the University of Mississippi with a degree in Art and Education. She taught 8th-grade English in Jackson, MS, and Las Vegas, NV.
Luci met her husband, 1st Lt. Robert Amason, who was home from the Korean War, and they were wed in July, 1954, a marriage that continued for almost 65 years, until Bob passed in 2019. After the war and dental school, the couple moved to Tuscaloosa in 1961 where they began an orthodontic practice and raised their four children.
Always a teacher at heart, Luci taught 'English As A Second Language' for 30 years, 8th Grade Girls Sunday School, and Young Adult Sunday School well into her 80s. She volunteered thousands, maybe even millions(!), of hours through the Junior League, Habitat For Humanity, Hospice Of West Alabama, Calvary Baptist Church, and the Brewer Porch Children's Center.
A gifted hostess, Luci was also the consummate Southern cook, especially when it came to wild game. In fact, the family never had 'butterball turkey' for holiday meals; instead, Luci treated them to dinners of wild duck, wild turkey, quail, venison, and once, a dish dubbed by the children as 'gross' grouse.
Luci Amason is survived by her four children: Jane Amason Draughon (Walter); Carol Amason Drummond (Mike); Marion Amason Kellough (Steve); Robert M. Amason, Jr. (Noel); 13 grandchildren — Meghan Draughon Dorman (Eric); Jake Draughon (Lina); Haley Draughon Erickson (Jake); Justin Drummond (Claire); Brett Drummond (Sarah); Amy Kathryn Drummond Gannon (James); Julia Drummond Babis (Drake); Drew Kellough (Courtney); Claire Kellough Hart (Brandon); Robert M. Amason, III; Caroline Amason; Olivia Amason; William Amason; and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear friend and companion for 25 years, Mabel Lee. We give special thanks to the staff of 'Seniors Prefer Homecare' for the wonderful care provided to 'Mom' these last four years.
The family will receive friends at Luci's home following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to 'Calvary Baptist Church - ESL' or 'Here To Serve Feeding Ministry' (htserve.org).
