Dr. Porter's classes were among the finest and most treasured experiences of my life. I am grateful to her for the priceless knowledge she shared with warmth and humor and graciousness. I have kept all my notes from her classes (1972 to 1974) and read through them again from time to time for pure enjoyment.

I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I wish I hadn't been too shy to tell her.

Thank you, Mary Gray Porter. You were magnificent.

I'm so sorry to hear this.  Dr. Porter was a teacher and dear mentor to me at the University of Alabama.  She influenced my life and my career.  My thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.

I have loved Mary Gray Porter since I traveled to Tuscaloosa to interview her for a scholarly journal. I said to her during one of our sessions that I hoped the interview will do her justice. With a twinkle in her eye, she said, "I don't." That was Mary Gray's wit, always charming.  I was a complete stranger, and she opened her home to me. I wanted to emulate her--she was my ideal.
