Mary Sue Smith

Mary Sue Smith, 81, of Tuscaloosa, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Hospice of West Alabama. A visitation will be held on Wednesday February 23, 2022, at 10AM, from Memory Chapel of Tuscaloosa. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11AM from the funeral home Chapel, and will be officiated by Pastor Freddy Williams. Interment will follow from Memory Hill Gardens, Garden of Prayer, under the direction of Memory Chapel, a Dignity Memorial provider.

Mrs. Smith was born April 26, 1940 to the late Franklin Clifton Thigpen and Marie Thigpen. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family immensely. She made a career of caring for her husband and sons and taking care of all of the needs of the home and family. “A Good Christian Lady,” she was a member of Cross Pointe Church, where she attended for as long as her health permitted. She had a naturally investigative spirit and loved pursuing family Genealogy. Mrs. Smith also enjoyed her pets, and was especially fond of her cats.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Charles Thigpen and sister Elizabeth Carroll. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of almost 63 years John “Jay” W. Smith; sons Rodney L. (Belynda) Smith and Michael N. (Dawn S.) Smith; grandchildren: Chase (Taylor) Smith, Marshall Smith, Morgan (Adam) Sutton and Parker Smith; one brother Louis Thigpen and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.

Serving as Active Pallbearers will be Chase Smith, Marshall Smith, Parker Smith, Adam Sutton, Ken Dunn and Mike Elledge.
