Born in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on May 23, 1921, she graduated from Holt High School, where she was selected “Miss Holt High” in 1938. Mrs. Weaver was a dedicated member of Alberta Baptist Church for over 60 years, teaching Sunday school classes and singing in the choir. An accomplished seamstress, she enjoyed designing, sewing and owning her fabric shop in Alberta City. She loved gardening and cooking, always sharing her abundant vegetables, flowers, and feasts with her many friends and family members. Often found in the kitchen at Buffalo Phil's, she took great delight in her role as chief pie chef.
An avid Crimson Tide fan, she loved attending the basketball games at Coleman Coliseum. Her delightful cheers and beautiful smile will truly be missed, especially in her longtime seating area, section X.
With heroic help, she and her devoted dog, “Bear” were able to walk away from the remains of her beloved home on April 27th without complaint. With a devout faith and dedication to seeking God's will, Oda Mae understood that “the will of God will never take you where the grace of God cannot protect you.” Never a victim, she remarked that God had “other plans” for her beyond April 27. Those who were blessed by her courage and positive attitude know that God apparently planned for her beautiful inspiration to survive as well. It will indeed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elias Franklin Barnett of Perry County; her husband, Welborn Weaver; her sisters, Cleo Rigsby, Maude Etheridge, Odell Frost and Ruth Barnett; and brothers, Colvin Barnett and Paul Barnett.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Weaver Moses of Dora; sons, Kyle Weaver (Drena) of Cottonwood, Dyson Weaver (Cindy) of Birmingham, and Phillip Weaver (Mary Jean) of Tuscaloosa; sister, Grace Ward (Hugh); sister-in-law, Sarah Weaver (Colvin); brother, Eber Barnett (Ethel), all of Cottondale; her grandchildren, Ken, Renee, Beth, Deeya, Russ, Shannon, Jay, Corbin, Phillip, and Genny; great-grandchildren, Chris, Laura, Kellie, Regan, Victoria, and Ashlynn; and several nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers include Vincent Nero and the heroic individuals who rescued her from her home and escorted her to safety on April 27, 2011.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Corder of Alberta Baptist Church officiating and Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alberta Baptist Church Building Fund, 3722 Palisades Drive, Suite B, Tuscaloosa, Ala. 35405.
