Maxwell was born on March 17, 1936, in Coker, Alabama. He graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1955, a milestone that remained an important part of his story and a reflection of the community that shaped him.
A dedicated and steadfast servant to his state and country, Maxwell joined the Alabama National Guard, where he served faithfully for 42 years, 11 months, and 17 days before retiring as a platoon sergeant. He also built a long and reliable career in industry, spending over 30 years with Gulf States Paper and later continuing his work at Alabama River Pulp.
In addition to being a loyal citizen, Maxwell was a spirited fan of Alabama football and softball. He enjoyed traveling across the United States, Canada, and Mexico in his RV, embracing the freedom of the journey and the simple pleasure of discovering new places. He also loved to dance, especially with his Focus 50 group at the Northport Community Center.
Maxwell was a member of Masonic Excel Lodge 655 and a Shriner. He also volunteered with Wings of Grace, generously giving his time in service to others.
He was a man of many talents and pursuits, expressing his passions through his involvement in the community and, most importantly, through his care for his family.
Maxwell was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Eva Nell Nelson; his son, Tony Maxwell Nelson; his parents, Wyman and Vivian Nelson; his sister, Dorphine “Dot” Mosely; and his brothers, Otis Nelson, William Delmas Nelson, and Billie Byron Nelson.
He is survived by his daughter, Kelly Baillet (Gerry); his grandchildren, Jimmy Stokes (Melanie), Mike Baillet (Celine), Marie Baillet (Nick), Michelle Baillet (Brandon), and Cereniti Jones; and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the Tuscaloosa County High School Class of 1955.
