

Reverend Samuel Roscoe Nettles, Jr., age 81, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., quietly went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at 10:18 a.m., at Hospice of West Alabama after a short illness.He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge Samuel Roscoe Nettles, Sr. and his mother, Rose Beard Nettles, both from Meridian, Miss.Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Gloria Smoot Nettles of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; sons, Samuel Roscoe Nettles, III of Tuscaloosa and Patrick Shelby Nettles of Tuscaloosa; sister, Jo Ellen Cantey (James); nephews, Michael Cantey of Meridian, Miss., Mark Cantey of Meridian, Miss., Timothy Cantey Robbie of Montgomery, Ala. and David Cantey (Jeanna) of Piperton, Tenn; and many cousins.Sam was born April 10, 1934 in Meridian, Miss. where he attended school through high school. He is a graduate of King College in Bristol, Tenn. and Columbia Seminary in Decatur, Ga. with a Masters in Clinical Theology. Sam informed his parents, at the age of 4, that he desired to be a minister of the church. He was an active member of the Tuscaloosa Kiwanis club for many years and participated in their prison enrichment program and school literacy program. He served as pastor to the following Presbyterian churches: Trinity Church of Canton and Woodstock, Ga.,Clifton Road Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Ga. (Clifton Road), Henry Memorial Church in Dublin, Ga., Bethal Church in Tuscaloosa and Cuba Church in Cuba, Alabama and has been a chaplain at Bryce Hospital from 1971 - 2013.The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 1:00 pm. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, on Skyland Blvd in Tuscaloosa, Ala. with burial immediately following. Pallbearers will be his four nephews and two friends, James McGriff of Tuscaloosa and Murray Nevin of Tuscaloosa. The family request in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of West Alabama.
