

Spurgeon Davis, age 90, of Tuscaloosa, went to be with his Lord Jesus Feb. 27, 2012, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Corder and Dr. Joe Bob Mizzell officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Edward and Myrtle Allen Davis; and his brother, Lenord Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Jacobs Davis; his daughter, Kathy Davis Alexander (Randall); his son, Richard Jacobs Davis; his brothers, J.B. Davis, Ed Davis, Herbert Davis, and Paul Davis; his grandchildren, Amber Effner (Matt), April Alexander, and Amy Sparks (Jon); and his great-grandchildren, Kaylan and Kirsten Effner.
He was born in Cottondale in 1921. He graduated from Holt High School. In October of 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for five years during World War II.
At a young age, he joined Alberta Baptist Church, where he became a longtime member. He served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Bible teacher, chairman of the Deacons, and any other way he was asked to serve. His favorite book was the Bible.
Spurgeon retired from Hunt Oil Company in 1985 as a marketing representative after 33 years of service. He was a devoted husband of 66 years and a father who showed his love for his family in many ways.
Pallbearers will be Jim Steadman, Randy Davis, Mike Davis, Barry Falls, Bart Tingle, Robert Williams, Dave Kitchens, John Matthews, and Joe Southern.
Honorary pallbearers are members of Alberta Baptist Church and former employees of Hunt Oil.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alberta Baptist Church Building Fund.
