COTTONDALE - Vernon A. Busby, of Cottondale, Ala., passed away July 12, 2019 at home, seven months after his dear wife. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2019, at Holten Heights Church of the Nazarene, 4401 17th St. NE, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404, with Rev. William Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lane Rainey Busby; his parents, William Gilbert Busby and Myrtle Vera Fikes Busby; siblings, James Busby (Kathleen), Mildred Busby Tullis (Bill), Margaret Busby Long (Walter), Willie Mae Busby Parker (Wed), Warren G. Busby (Mae), his twin brother, Herman Alva Busby; and son-in-law, Ronnie Barton.
He was an Independent Owner-Operator who drove his own 18 wheeler and also owned a small fleet.
His last job before retirement was working for Drummond Coal where he was known as “Smiling Jesus.” What a heritage of faith our parents left for us and a deep, devout love of each other for 66 years.
Survivors include his brother-in-law, Maurice Rainey (Eva); daughters, Jan Jones (Bud), Lisa Akers (Billy); son, David Busby; grandchildren, Jennifer Stephens (Heath), Brittany Barton, Hayden Britt, Brandon Busby, Colleen Britt, Savannah Busby; great-grandchildren Erin Butler, Joel O’Dell Kate O’Dell; great-great-granddaughter, Harper Lane Butler; and many nieces and nephews he truly loved.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army at the end of World War II and also the Korean War.
Pallbearers will be Heath Stephens, Hayden Britt, Brandon Busby, Rodney LaGrone, Byron LaGrone, Larry Rainey and Kerry Rainey.
Honorary pallbearers are members of Holten Heights Church of the Nazarene, his friends and neighbors.
