Wyman Howard Duckworth spent the majority of his adult life in Tuscaloosa after two years of service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He was married to Mary Ann Presley Duckworth for 65 years at the time of her death in 2020. Their infant daughter, Cynthia Ann Duckworth, passed away shortly after her birth. His fur babies included many cats over the years—Princess being the most talked about and photographed of them all. Wyman enjoyed fishing as a young adult. He loved Alabama football and chocolate anything and was an avid collector of Bama Championship footballs and caps. He could be seen almost any day of the week mowing his lawn, walking briskly near his Cottondale subdivision, and eating at Southland Restaurant.
After Mary Ann’s death, Wyman resided at Garden Hills Assisted Living in Columbus, Mississippi, where he was near his younger brother, Frank Duckworth.
Wyman’s life’s work was baking. His cookies, cakes, and breads fed servicemen; Columbus, Mississippi bakery customers; and residents and staff of Bryce Hospital. He retired after 20 years of service with the State of Alabama from Bryce Hospital.
Wyman surrendered his life to Christ well into his adulthood. Brothers Rex Patton and Norman Owens walked with him as a young Christian. He and Mary Ann developed deep friendships with both men and their families, and they were members of Faith Baptist Church in Cottondale.
Wyman was one of five children in the Duckworth family. He leaves behind three of them and their spouses, Mary Ann’s sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Wyman will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Memory Hill Gardens, 2200 Skyland Blvd East, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35405.
