

Philip James Butler
Philip James Butler, 91, of Twin Falls passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 11, 2016.
Philip was born June 26, 1925 in Dawson, New Mexico, the second son of William and Anna Butler. His family moved to Los Angeles where Philip graduated from Manuel Arts High School. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a First Class Corpsman and served for 6 years. While stationed at Sun Valley, Idaho he met Vonna Davis of Twin Falls and they were married on July 29, 1946. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. During the Korean War Philip was recalled to duty as a Third Class Corpsman, stationed at Oak Knoll hospital in Oakland, California. Philip graduated from the University of California at Santa Clara as a mathematical engineer. He worked many years for Westinghouse and after retiring he enjoyed studying the field of finance and economics.
Philip was a member of the LDS Church and served in many callings. He had a wealth of knowledge as he loved to read and study the scriptures. His favorite calling was teaching a Gospel Doctrine class. In retirement he could be found daily at the library where he enjoyed the peaceful, quiet atmosphere and the endless possibility of books and other publications.
Philip and Vonna recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with their family of 4 children; Lorrie (Gary) of Sandy, Utah; Lynette (Grant) of Twin Falls, Idaho; Michael (Hirolo) of Kuna, Idaho and Shauna (Troy) of Kuna, Idaho. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren and 12 great, great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna; his brother, Bill; sister-in-law, Lorraine and son-in-law, Grant Maughan.
A family memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at White Mortuary, 136 4th Ave. East, Twin Falls. Burial will take place at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise. Services are under the direction of White Mortuary, Chapel by the Park, Twin Falls.
