Dakota James Powell, age 30, of Troup, Texas went on to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, December 18, 2020. Dakota was born Friday, April 27, 1990 in Tyler, Texas to Jack and Debra Powell.

Cody was a gentle, kind man of God, who not only preached of His word, but lived by it, too. He changed so many lives through his wise words of inspiration. Being a police officer and able to serve his community generously, graciously and humbly was his passion. Cody had a zest for life and lived it to the fullest, especially when he was showing his personality by striking a goofy pose. He never met a stranger and was loved by so many people. Cody loved to sing, he was known for out-singing everyone at church. He absolutely loved his family. Cody was a dedicated husband, and father. His children were his world, he enjoyed reading to his boys and act out the characters to them before bed. Being on his bike gave him a sense of freedom, and he was able to see the world in a different light. Even though it led to him leaving this world, he went on doing what he loved. Their is no doubt in anyone's mind who knew Cody where he is now, and that his legacy will live on in those he helped and was a safe haven for.

Cody is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Shelby Powell; sons, Thomas and Gatling Powell; parents, Jack and Debra Powell; sister, Kacey Powell; mother in law, Shelley Burks; and nieces, Brooklynn Powell, Alexis Powell, Farrah Hipp and Naomi Pugh.

Cody is preceded in death by his brother, BJ Powell; sister, Kadie Powell; niece, J.C. Rae Hipp; grandfathers, William A. Drew and Tommy Jack Powell; grandmothers, Patricia Drew and Catherine Powell; and aunt, Jolisa Hart.

A visitation for Dakota will be held Tuesday, December 29, 2020 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., following the memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at the Cross Brand Cowboy Church, 11915 FM 20 Tyler, Texas 75708.

You used to come out to location to check on me. After we both moved jobs, you used to come by the house. I never doubted your friendship. I always trusted your mentor ship. I always looked forward to that text or call you’d bless me with. I always loved your wisdoms and pick me ups in bad days, I sure could use one now. You’ve made a huge impact on my wife and I’s life. I’m blessed to have met you! Thanks for everything Cody. Love you man!

I remember the first time we met. I was being bullied in the parking lot at school, when the other kids saw you walk up behind me they ran. When i turned around and saw you a senior standing infront of a sixth grade like me. I thought i was in more trouble. When you reached out you hand and smiled i knew everything was okay. You asked me if i was okay, and thats where our friendship started. I will never forget that or you. I love, and miss you brother. I can't wait to see you again. But if i see you again soon it will be to soon. But hey i will bring the donuts... Just promise you won't chase me again i can't run that fast. 😁

My brother we got really close these last few years yeah we didn't hangout as much as we wanted to because as we all know. Life with work and family makes it hard to get out and about. But we always talked on the phone or text. I love you brother and will forever cherish the memories we have. ❤❤❤❤

You never met a stranger nor let friends of the past feel as anything less than just a friend. You have always been such a great example of a Christian. You have always been a positive light to those around you. So many of my Winona band memories are filled with your presence. You will forever be remembered.

All I can really say is I love you and I’ll always miss you. You lived Christ every day. Thanks for your friendship.

Shelby, your husband was an amazing man and an ambassador for Christ. Thank you for sharing him with us!

Boys,

Your dad was a true hero, and loved the kind of life he would want to be an example for you guys. He loved you both dearly and made it known to everyone how he felt about you guys!

It breaks my heart to be writing this and not saying it to you. We grew apart as adults but you were one of my bestfriends as a kid. So many times I remember spending fishing, or playing in the woods around your house. All the way up to the weight room in middle school you pushed me to be my best. I love you cousin I wish I had said that more.
