Funeral services for Douglas S. Ham, 94, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am at Tyler Memorial Funeral Home, visitation at 9:00 prior to service, with Pastor Mark Skorheim officiating. Burial will follow at Tyler Memorial Park.
Mr. Ham went to be with Jesus on Saturday April 7, 2018. He was born in Lindale Texas on March 3, 1924, to Isham Dewitt Ham and Nettie Sue Crews Ham. Doug grew up in the Duck Creek community, attending Harris Chapel School and graduating from Lindale High School in 1942. After graduation, he was drafted by the United States Army, attending Camp Fannin for basic training. He then took a train from Troup Texas to New York, where he boarded the Queen Mary and headed to Germany. Doug fought in WWII in the 290th Regiment of the 75th Infantry Division. He served his country with honor, being awarded the bronze star in 2016. After the war, Doug returned to Tyler, meeting the love of his life Peggy June McRee Ham. They were married for 63 years, prior to her passing in 2012. Doug was a member of Pleasant Retreat Methodist Church, and retired from Tyler Pipe Industries. He was the most loving father, grandpa, and friend. Those whom had the privilege of knowing him, knew he was a sweetheart. A precious soul who was always making those around him laugh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and siblings: Coy D. Ham, Jack E. Ham, Virginia S. Jones, and Dorothy Nell Rhoades.
Survivors include his sister Lucy Decker of Gladewater, children Barbara Ham Chambers of Tyler, Beverly Newman and husband Mike of Tyler, D. Scott Ham Jr. of Tyler, and Rhonda Ham of Flint. Grandchildren Dawn Morales of Brownsville, Shawn Scott of Round Rock, Vaughn Newman of Durham, NC, Melissa Barters of Paris, Wendy Elza, Heather Allen, Cindy Davis, and Kaitlin Ham of Tyler. Great Grand-Children Becky Morales, Josh Morales, Kaitlyn Morales, Ashlyn Scott, Dylan Scott, Emily Allen, Alyssa Allen, Andrew Allen, D. Chance Powell, C. Cameron Wandall, Morgan Wandall, Evan Davis, John Wayne Lewis, and Scarlett Scott. One Great-Great Grandchild Leighton Powell.
Pallbearers will be Vaughn Newman, Bill Barters, Wayne Allen, Jayson Blackstone, Chance Powell, Cameron Wandall, and Desmon Davis.
