04/01/1930 - 03/21/2026
Evelyn Elizabeth Carpenter’s older sister exclaimed “Dolly” when she saw Evelyn for the first time mistaking her sister for a doll. The name stuck, and almost 96 years later, “Dolly” was still the perfect name for a remarkable woman who was loved deeply by her family, friends, church community, and countless others.
Evelyn “Dolly” Carpenter passed from this life into Heaven on Saturday, March 21, 2026. She spent her final days surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchild – an appropriate passing for the matriarch who brought her family together time and again over many decades.
Dolly was born April 1, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Walter Robert and Hettie Vail Thompson. She graduated from Reagan High School in 1948, where she was proud to be a member of the flag guard, the Reagan Red Coats.
After a 9-week courtship, Dolly married the love of her life, John Carpenter, on May 15, 1954. Despite the short courtship, John and Dolly were married 69 years until John passed on December 27, 2023.
Dolly was a nurse at heart, a calling she formalized through her education and profession. She graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Houston, Texas in 1951, and worked as a surgical nurse, a pediatric nurse, and a charge nurse across various hospitals and medical practices.
But Dolly’s truest calling was that of a mother and eventually grandmother and great grandmother. Together, Dolly and John raised four children who Dolly cherished, Cathy, Caron, Chris, and Carol.
Dolly’s strength was one of many admirable traits she embodied. She was resilient through adversity and known for her adherence to routines, but somehow, at the same time as sweet as the chocolate chip and molasses cookies that she loved to bake for her grandchildren. She loved hosting get-togethers with family and friends, especially during the holidays. She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed trying different recipes.
Even at age 95, Dolly never lost her quick wit, sharp mind, and competitive spirit. She enjoyed playing dominos with friends and card games and chicken foot with family whenever they were together. Dolly found great pleasure in gardening, especially growing roses. She also made numerous porcelain dolls and sewed each of their outfits.
Dolly was a proud Texas Aggie, where her son and three of her grandchildren earned degrees. She looked forward each Fall to watching college football and rooted for her Aggies enthusiastically.
Dolly was a devout Christian. She was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, including Trinity Lutheran in Tyler, Texas.
Dolly is preceded in death by her husband John, her mother Vail and father Walter Robert, and her sisters Barbara and Claudine. Dolly is survived by her brother John Thompson, four children Cathy, Caron (husband Carl), Chris (wife Ruth), and Carol, her four grandchildren Carrie (husband Tyler), Robert, Jeffrey (wife Abigail), and Clayton (wife Lauren), and her great grandson Caleb.
A private family service to inter Dolly will be held at Tyler Memorial Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life for Dolly will be scheduled at a later date at Trinity Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Hospice of East Texas, Trinity Lutheran Church, or an organization of your choice.
