Gene "Sarge" Edward Carney

Funeral services for Gene Edward “Sarge” Carney, 87, of Tyler will be 10:00am Monday at Tyler Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. Carney was born on July 27, 1931 in Jacksonville to Burrell E. and Ellen Luther Carney and passed away on July 30, 2018 at Watkins-Logan State Veterans Home in Tyler. A military man, this warrior proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, retiring as the First Shirt. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was a Purple Heart recipient. Returning home to Tyler, Gene became a certified Peace Officer, and served with the Troup Police Department, Smith County Sheriff’s Department and as the Chief of Police at Tyler Junior College. A man true to his word with a keen wit, those who would know him would testify that he would literally give you the shirt off his back. Survivors include his daughters, Merica Stamps of Tyler and Ellen Garrett of Tyler; grandchildren, Justin Stamps, Hayley Osorio and husband Josh, Adrianne Garrett, Collin Garrett and wife Andrea and Logan Garrett; great-grandchildren, Paightyn Osorio, Sahvanah Osorio, Sophia & Mia Garrett and Kinsley Londoff and brother, Don Whitson of Mission. Mr. Carney was preceded in death by his wife Chisako “Micky” Carney.

I was Gene and Mickey's Pastor at Omen Baptist Church for 18 Months. I loved Gene and His Family. He was one of My Best Friends!He was a Man Held in High Esteem by Myself and my family. He Was the kind of Person that'd Help a Person who was on need! He certainly helped me Many Times! I'm Saddened at his Home Going. We shall miss him greatly! A "Grunt" for the USMC & a Soldier for Christ! Semper Fidelis, Good Bless and "I'll See You Up Yonder in Heaven!!!"

Sorry for the loss of Gene. He was the best friend anyone could have. Gene will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Semper - Fi my friend. Love and miss yall.
