Nita, as she was known to her family and friends, was an elementary school teacher specializing in bi-lingual education. She taught first in San Antonio and later in Tyler schools. Nita was very active in church activities throughout her life. She felt a deep spiritual connection to Eureka Springs, Arkansas while vacationing there one summer, and chose it as the perfect place for her retirement. She found joy in the Arkansas countryside and participating in First Christian Church and local doll club activities. With the help of her dedicated caregiver, Anna Kolaski, she was able to remain in her home with a view of Beaver Lake until she entered hospice care.
She was the daughter of A. Leon (1897-1985) and Velva Cook (1902-2005), long-time residents of Tyler. She is survived by her children, David C. Lewis in Houston, Michael A. Lewis in Austin, and Karen L. Lewis in Tyler; her grandchildren, James Lewis, Jacob Lewis, Megan Gillespie, Tara Wright, Heather Boots; and her great grandchildren Hayden Wright, Addison Wright, Peyton Boots, and Paul Laird.
She will be laid to rest near her parents during a private family burial at Tyler Memorial Cemetery on August 29, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to First Christian Church, 4202 South Broadway Avenue, Tyler TX
