Albert H. (Al) Sholes of Montville, CT, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed peacefully from this world on October 4, 2025, at age 83. He was surrounded by family, including his loving wife of 28 years, Elaine L. Sholes, who was continually at his side in the final days of his life. He also leaves behind friends and extended family members who share fond memories of Al’s devotion to his family, his friends, and to his community and his country.
He was the son of the late Albert C. Sholes and Henrietta M. (Steiger) Sholes and resided in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he was born, until he entered the U.S. Navy in 1960, following his graduation from high school.
Al served his country as a Submariner for 21 years, home based at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1981. During his service to his country, Albert completed 21 tours of duty aboard ship, visiting many countries around the world. He greatly enjoyed traveling the globe and learning about new places and people.
During those years, Al used his extensive expertise with small and long arms to serve as an Air Marshall. He was also a frequent instructor in target shooting aboard ship. In off duty times, Al was a skilled gunsmith and expert target shooter.
Even before his retirement from the Navy, he was a member of the Quaker Hill Rod and Gun Club in Uncasville, CT, for nearly 50 years. While serving in many different positions within the club, one of his favorite undertakings was helping in the instruction of Youth Shooters.
Al was also a part of the Montville Police Department Arms Training program. Acting as Range Safety Officer with the Quaker Hill Rod and Gun Club for over 30 years, he contributed his shooting and gun smithing expertise whenever needed, and always with patience and a ready grin.
He also served his community as a volunteer fireman with the Oakdale Fire department for many decades.
In addition to his devoted wife, Elaine, Al leaves behind his daughter Pamela Hagerman of Maryville, Tennessee, and her family, including husband Paul Hagerman, son Kyle Hagerman and wife Taylor, Alyssa Hart and husband Kyle Hart, and their two daughters, Magnolia and Karalynn Hart, of Nashville, TN, and daughter Allison Hagerman, of Maryville, TN. He also leaves his son Robert Sholes and his wife, Lauren of Norwich, CT and their children: daughter, Amber Nichols and her husband Travis, their children Levi and Piper, all of Maryville, TN, and son Ryan Sholes, and his family: wife, Sarah, and their son Cameron, of Groton, CT.
Final arrangements are in the care of the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen; and burial services are private.
