Born April 3, 1953, in Rumford Maine, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Dorothea (Gilman) Bennett. Debra (Debi) was raised in Rumford Maine until she and her family moved to Colchester CT., when she was about 12 years old. Debi was a graduate of Bacon Academy High School in Colchester.
Debi worked for many years in Hospice and as a home health care aid. She was the loving and devoted mother to her daughter, Tonia Szymanski (Corey) of Clinton, along with three sons, Joshua Shukis (Marylin) of Colchester, Fred Shukis (Deanna) of Dayville, and Glen Piette (Samantha) of Old Lyme. Debi is also survived by her husband of 20 years, Paul Dytko.
A friend to all, a bright light in every room, with an infectious smile and with a kind but sassy sense of humor, Debi was loved by all that knew her. She was a wonderful and caring mom, grandmother, great grandmother and wife. Debi’s passions were spending time with her family, crocheting, bird watching, shopping with the girls, dining out (which was always an adventure if you were with her) and she absolutely loved traveling with her family.
Debi adored interacting with her seven beloved grandchildren; Kaitlin (Myles) Luboff, Savannah (Joshua) Harrington, Carly (Chris Ruggiero) Szymanski, Fiona Shukis, Emmeline Shukis, Henry Shukis, Bennett Piette, and her two great granddaughters; Sophie Harrington and Violet Ruggiero.
Debi is also survived by her sister Rebecca (Bennett) DeMario of Westerly RI., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will also be sadly missed by her little dog and faithful friend “Sassy.”
A celebration of Debi’s life will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 2:00pm, at the Szymanski residence, 110A Long Hill Rd., Clinton, CT. 06413.
