

Stonington-Edward R. Russell, age 87, of Stonington, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London after an ongoing medical condition, with Penny, Beth and David at his side. He was born in Los Angeles on February 5, 1938 to the late Charles and Irene (Weinman) Russell. He was married to Geraldine (Minton) Russell for 23 years. They raised three children together. He remarried in 1982 to Kay (Easler) Russell. She predeceased him in 2014.
Edward retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service in 1976. He went on to Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, obtaining his chief engineers license. Ed worked for Sun Oil and then Wilcox Marine, as well as a few other small businesses. After retiring again he now chose to stay closer to home and the water, remaining connected to the military by becoming a lifelong member of the VFW, the Honor Guard, the Holland Club, the Sub Vets and the Fleet Reserve. He enjoyed outings on his sailboat, bicycling, gardening and collecting his treasured items, as well as time spent with his many different clubs. Ed adored his cat “Callie” and his former dog “Pugly”.
He is survived by his loving family including, a daughter Penny Russell of Mystic, a son David Russell of New London, and grandchildren Beth Russell, Laura Russell, Erica Russell, Austin Russell, and Kasey (Russell) Grundy. He also leaves behind four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter Rachel (Russell) Lewane in 2015.
Ed was greatly loved and will also be missed by his extended family, friends and neighbors.
A celebration of life will be held at the Pawcatuck VFW, Post 1265, 160 South Broad Street, Pawcatuck on Thursday, July 3rd from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The honor guard service will begin at 6:00 PM. Please visit www.montvillefuneralhome.com to leave an online condolence for the Russell family.
