Hughie was born October 20, 1926 in Sacramento, CA to Claude and Ila Green. He was raised in the Catskill Mountains of NY and attended a one-room schoolhouse as a child.
He joined the navy on October 25, 1943 and was assigned to the pacific fleet during WWII. He continued his navy career as an Electrician’s Mate, achieving Chief of the Boat on the Angler SS-240, retiring on February 4, 1966. After retiring from the Navy, he continued his education (sometimes studying in the car in the driveway because the house was full of loud children) and then became an electrical teacher at Norwich Technical High School, retiring in June of 1980. Following his teaching career with the State of CT, he became a self employed electrical contractor.
Hughie married the love of his life, Ruth (Mahoney), on August 26, 1950. They enjoyed 74 years of marriage, raised seven children, and traveled throughout North America and Europe. He was optimistic, adventurous, and always maintained a boyish outlook on life. He knew how to have fun. He flew airplanes, camped, fished, sailed, water skied, biked over 100 miles in a day, created beautiful Adirondack chairs (and many other items) in his basement workshop, kayaked into his 90’s, and zip lined on his 90th birthday. Hughie embraced the future. He loved new gadgets, technology, and the internet. If a new laptop or smartphone came on the market, he owned it.
He is survived by his wife Ruth, his seven children Carol (Steve) Karney, Anita (Jack) Tudisco, Diane (Matt) Hillyer, Mary (Leon) Laroux, Claudia (Marc) Manville, John Green, Peg (Dan) Rabasco; 18 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his grandson Joel Tudisco.
Hughie’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his large family, attending numerous trips and events with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Private services with Military Honors are with Church and Allen Funeral home in Montville, CT. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army was close to his heart because they helped him as a young man when he became separated from his family and needed help getting home. He never forgot that they stepped up when he needed it most and he supported them throughout his life.
