Ruth Theresa Green

Ruth Mahoney Green, 96, of Oakdale, died July 12, 2026, at home surrounded by her family. She was a devoted member of Saint John’s Parish and lived a life rooted in faith, compassion, and service to others. Ruth was born May 5,1930, in New York, New York, to Timothy and Anna Mahoney. She was raised in the Catskill Mountains of New York and graduated at the age of 16, as salutatorian from Margaretville Central High School on June 24, 1946. She went on to pursue her RN degree from Vassar Brothers Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as salutatorian on June 9, 1950. Ruth’s love for learning never faded so she returned to the classroom when the youngest of her 7 children was in high school, graduating Summa cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State College with a Bachelor of Arts on May 20, 1979. Ruth married the love of her life, John Hewitt (Hughie) on Aug. 26, 1950. They enjoyed 74 years of marriage, raised seven children, and traveled throughout North America and Europe. She was a selfless wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, always putting everyone before herself. Ruth’s nursing career was based on compassion, kindness and hard work. Her long time patients were frequently the recipients of knitted or crocheted hats, mittens and scarves. Ruth also enjoyed being challenged. She pursued what did not come to her naturally. She struggled to have good penmanship so she took a course in calligraphy and she found art to be difficult so she took painting classes. Ruth had an amazing memory which was a good thing with so many birthdays to remember! She was also a wiz at crossword puzzles and Jeopardy. Ruth is survived by her seven children, Carol (Steve) Karney, Anita (Jack) Tudisco, Diane (Matt) Hillyer, Mary (Leon) Laroux, Claudia (Marc) Manville, John Green, Peg (Dan) Rabasco; 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Hughie and grandson Joel Tudisco.

Ruth’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her large family, attending numerous trips and events with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on August 1st at 10 a.m. at St John’s Church, 22 Maple Ave, Uncasville, CT, followed by interment at St. Patrick’s cemetery. Church and Allen Funeral Home in Montville are in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. John’s Church.
