Dorna Elizabeth Thomas was born on June 3, 1956, in Kingston, Jamaica. She was the proud daughter of Obadiah and Bobsy Thomas, and the fourth eldest of her seven siblings. Dorna immigrated to the United States with her brother Japheth, and sister Caroldene (Carol), on December 1o, 1972, where she then completed her secondary education in 1975 at Union High School in Union, New Jersey.
After completing high school, Dorna worked alongside her sister Carol, at the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company (MBL), in Newark. It would be a few years after, while sitting on the porch of her home that she met Wilbert Angoy. Sometime after, the couple welcomed the apple of her eye, Dorna’s firstborn and only child Jamall. Dorna enjoyed those first few years, staying home and raising Jamall, but eventually landed a career as a Patient Care Technician at Overlook Hospital in Summit. She retired from Overlook Hospital in 2017 after 30 years of dedicated and distinguished service.
Dorna was the epitome of unconditional love and ensured that everyone felt her warm, welcoming presence. Meeting with Dorna whether you were family or stranger, was like picking up right where you left off with a long-lost cousin. She was the best storyteller…each conversation was full of excitement, stimulation, and tons of laughter. Community, family, and friendship were core to who she was and she treasured opportunities to be surrounded by family and friends.
Dorna wholeheartedly enjoyed gardening (her radiant hydrangeas and lilies), cooking (her “Famous Potato Salad” and Jamaican Cuisine), loving on her family, and embracing everyone in Irvington and every community that she's been associated with.
Left to celebrate her life and carry on her legacy are her Son and Daughter-in-law, Jamall and Deniecia, her three grandchildren: Janiya, Jair, and Jia, and her siblings, Rema, Japheth, Gail, Vicky, and Mary, as well as, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents Obadiah and Bobsy Thomas and her sister Carol, and nephew Jason.
