Edith was born on February 24, 1941, in Cayey, Puerto Rico to the late Gilberto Leon and Maria Melendez. She worked as a supervisor at a tobacco company and later at a clothing manufacturing company.
She married the late Nestor Charriez on January 7, 1959 and they decided to move to New Jersey in October 1969. Nestor left first to secure employment and find an apartment for the family. After their youngest child was born, the family followed in late February 1970 and Edith became a homemaker, caring for her three children and, later in life, her grandchildren.
Edith was very active at Saint Patrick’s Church in Elizabeth and was a member of the choir, while her husband, Nestor, was a Deacon for nearly forty years.
Edith enjoyed spending time with her family and was a wonderful cook. She loved animals and owned many cherished dogs and cats throughout her life. She had a green thumb, and it showed in the way her houseplants thrived and her gardens flourished. She enjoyed sewing, even making her children's clothing at times when they were growing up. She was crafty and always wrapped presents beautifully with lavish bows, ribbons, and cards. Her creativity was also expressed through her ornate and elaborately themed Christmas trees. She was known for her elegance and grace, always styled from head to toe. She and her husband enjoyed dancing, and when on the dance floor they became one, moving in sync and able to predict each other's next move.
Edith was a beautiful person inside and out. She was a loving wife for 66 years, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will always be greatly loved and deeply missed by her family.
