Erich was born on March 6, 1929 in Leverkusen-Schlebusch, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in the mid 1950’s. His early years in the US were spent with his aunt and uncle in Springfield, NJ.
In 1957, he met his future wife and they were married in March, 1959.
In Germany, Erich worked in the textile industry before he began working for a dynamite manufacturing facility. When he came to the US, he was a self taught tool maker. He eventually established Buttgereit Tool Company where he continued to work even after he officially retired in 1994. Erich was an avid soccer fan and played in Germany. After settling in NJ, he played goalie for the Newark Sports Club based at Farchers Grove in Union, NJ. Erich was also a member of the Deutscher Club in Clark, NJ.
Erich is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edda, and their children; Heidi (Vincent) Cimilluca and Thomas Buttgereit and granddaughter, Dawn (Michael).
