Fred was born in Summit, New Jersey on August 25, 1944 to S. Samuel and Lucy (Trovato) Juliano. He was raised in Union, New Jersey, and graduated from Union High School. He attended Union County Technical Institute and took many courses through Rutgers University.
He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967. He was a Sergeant and assigned as a Special Weapons Section Chief in Germany.
Fred joined the Union Fire Department in 1968 and rose through the ranks, retiring in 1995 as a Battalion Fire Chief with the assignment of Chief Inspector in charge of the Bureau of Fire Prevention.
He received over a dozen municipal, county, and state Awards over his years of service including being honored by the NJ Fire Prevention and Protection Association in 1988 as Fire Prevention Man of the Year.
He was a member of numerous professional associations including NJ Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association and the NJ Fire Prevention and Protection Association where he served as Vice President of the Union County Chapter for many years. He served on the Union Board of Education’s and Union Hospital’s Safety Committees, on the NJ Fire Protection Subcode Committee, and on the NJ Combined Energy/Mechanical Subcodes Committee.
Fred was the first member of the Union Fire Department to be licensed by the State of NJ as a Fire Protection Subcode Official. Through the years he was also awarded state licenses as a Construction Official, Building Subcode Official, Fire Prevention Official, Hotel & Multiple Dwellings Inspector, and BOCA 1 & 2 Family Dwellings Inspector. He qualified as a state instructor for Construction Codes.
After retiring from the fire department in 1995, he began working at the Union Building Department as the Municipal Fire Protection Subcode Official and held that post until he retired for good in 2011.
Fred was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He married Jean Buchy in 1970. They bought their first home in Union in 1971. They had two children, a son Paul and a daughter Donna Marie. The family moved to Springfield, NJ in 1990. Fred loved his family and was extremely proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. He always believed in “Family First” and when speaking of his grandchildren, he would say “There is not a bum in the bunch!”
Fred is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean; his children and their spouses Paul and Karen Juliano of Lopatcong, NJ and Donna and Arvin Jurado of Lower Macungie Twp, PA; and seven grandchildren, Marykate, Patrick, Eric, Nathaniel, Michael, Isabel, and Jack.
A visitation for Frederick will be held Sunday, January 14, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave, Union, NJ 07083.
A funeral Mass will occur Monday, January 15, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Holy Spirit Church, 971 Suburban Road, Union, NJ 07083.
Committal service will follow at Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery, 1500 Stuyvesant Avenue, Union, NJ 07083.
