Irma Menendez

April 27, 1933May 18, 2020

Irma Menendez was widowed at the young age of 31. When her husband died, the most important priority in her life was the well-being of her two children, Sonia and Rafael. She had many opportunities to marry again but refused because, as she has said many times, she had no idea if that stepfather would truly love her children.

At that time, she worked in a factory. She went to night school to learn clerical skills and obtained a position as head file clerk at Howard’s Saving’s Bank on Broad St. in Newark, New Jersey. There she remained for 25 years until her retirement.

By God’s amazing grace, she became a Christian in the year of 1980. After reading the Holy Bible she realized that she was a sinner and could only be saved by trusting in Christ alone and not by good works. She became an active member of Calvary Chapel, located in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and was always available to show God’s love to everyone she met. She loved cooking and sharing her delicious food with her neighbors at Schaefer Gardens in Union, New Jersey, where she resided.

She is survived by her daughter, Sonia Castro, and her precious grandchildren, Manuel Castro, Diana Castro, Daniel Castro, Ralph Menendez Jr., Naomi Menendez, and Isaiah Menendez.

Thank you, Mom, for all that you did for us.

I will always remember my cousin Irma, as one of the loving and caring matriarchs of our family. She loved being surrounded by family and went out of her way to make them feel loved. One of the way she showed love was through her awesome cooking and making people laugh. Irma was a prayer warrior always praying for family and friends. Irma was also our family historian and loved sharing stories about our ancestry. The only thing that exceeded her love for her family was her love for the Lord. She was a women of Faith and used every opportunity to share her love for the Lord with everyone she encountered. She will be deeply missed but I know that she is in the presence of the Lord and with all the loved ones that have gone before her.

My aunt Irma was a loving, caring person; always willing and ready to help those around her in any way possible. She enjoyed cooking and laughing. When I was about 12 years old I remember how she used to love to play jokes on her sister Isabel (my mother) hiding behind doors to scare her and then burst out laughing. I thank God for the opportunity to have visited with her before the stay home orders because of Covid-19. Well she is now in the arms of our Lord Jesuschrist whom she loved so much. I can only imagine the fantastic family reunion in heaven with her son Ralph, her sister Isabel, her dear cousins Gloria and Manolo and my precious daughter Ada. See you soon aunt Irma.

Irma was a good and Godly Christian woman who loved the Lord and her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a great cook, and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She was a great mother to my wife, and a wonderful mother in law. She will always be remembered, and will be with us in our hearts. She is now forever rejoicing in the Lord's presence.

I always remember her as a worshipper- I remember one time during a worship service looking over at her there she was with her eyes closed, hands clasped, tears running down her face- Heaven is rejoicing- haven’t seen Sonia in a very long time but I remember her beautiful voice- and I’ll always remember my friend Ralph- till we meet again

I met Mamá Irma when I started going to Calvary on 2005. I fell in Love with her the moment We met. We became good friends, we had more like a Mother and Daughter relationship. The kindness she had for everyone she met was exceptional. She was so loving, that anyone that met her fell in love with her. She was a Godly Woman. She Loved the Lord, and wanted to help everyone. I had the opportunity to work with her and her Son Ralph, at the center helping the the homeless with their needs. Everyone of the people she served, she treated them with so much love, that you could see the love of God in her . I had the opportunity to meet both of her kids Ralph and Sonia and their kids. She was so proud of both of her kids, and loved all her grandkids as well. My Beautiful Mamá Irma I will never forget her. She will always be in my heart and thoughts.
