She was born in Newark, NJ on November 13, 1933 to the late John and Sophie (nee Pas) Szpara. Jean was predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years Michael Ragan. She lived in Newark until they moved to Union, NJ 46 years ago.
Jean leaves behind her daughter Cheryl and son-in-law Greg of Bethlehem, PA, a son Michael and daughter-in-law Tammy of St. Petersburg, FL. a sister-in-law Maryann Ragan of Toms River, NJ, her beloved grandchildren Veronica, Shelby, and Blaise, great grandchildren Charles and Ruby, as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Jean worked at the Newark Public library for 55 years, last as manager of the Catalog Department. She was considered a mentor, friend, and life teacher to many she worked with. She was a hard-worker, pioneer of full-time working woman, and a committed mother.
In her spare time, she loved reading, visiting Atlantic City, discussing politics, serving on the Seton Hall Prep Mothers Auxiliary, or just sitting outside under the shade of her magnolia tree with Mike and her neighbors.
She was predeceased by her parents John and Sophie Szpara, brother Ted, brothers-in law John, Jack, and Joe, and sisters-in-law, Mary, and Anne.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Roman Catholic Church, 146 Irvine Turner Blvd, Newark, NJ 07103 on Friday April 5,2024 at 11:00 am followed by interment in Holy Cross, 340 Ridge Rd, North Arlington, NJ 07031.
No flowers will be accepted. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jean's name to St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Roman Catholic Church, 146 Irvine Turner Blvd, Newark, NJ 07103.
