From her birth in Hastings on Hudson, NY, on March 8, 1923
to her death, Josephine was devoted to family, friends, and travel. Born to Tekla and Julius Chemka, and blessed with five siblings, Jo’s life was filled with the busy bustle of a large extended family.
Married to John William Miller, the two had a son, Richard John Miller, and the family purchased a home in Union, NJ, where Jo would live for over 66 years. Working for the Union Center National Bank for over 26
years, she would jest that she worked to travel, completing journeys to Australia, Fiji, the Canadian Rockies, Switzerland and Hawaii. Josephine was a member of the Women’s Club of Maplewood, NJ, and filled out her recreational schedule as an avid bowler.
Jo had many long time friends in and around Union, playing Uno and Dominoes with them on a regular basis. Affectionately known to her close knit family as “Aunt Jo,” Josephine had 14 adult nieces and nephews and over 30 great nieces and nephews.
Aunt Jo also claimed the love of over 35 great, great nieces and nephews, and the support of her housemate and nephew Robert Spengler. She was predeceased by her husband John and son Richard, and by her sisters, Mary Sirotak of Cleveland, OH, Sophie Minkewicz, Julia Konick and brother Julius R. Chemka, all of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
Josephine is survived by her sister, Carolyn Ott of West Milford, NJ, and by her sister in law, Mabel Spengler of Florida.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
