Marie was born on September 26, 1925, in Newark, N.J. She was the daughter of Amelia Emily (nee Dolch) and Joseph Peter Goepfert. Marie grew up in Newark and lived in Hillside for over sixty years. She worked for J.L. Hammet Co. for 53 years, starting in the Newark warehouse in 1942. On her first day she was taught how to wrap a package and said that she didn’t think she would last a week. She not only made it through the first week, but through the 3,200 weeks that followed. Marie moved from the warehouse into the office and was promoted to purchasing clerk. She progressed through the purchasing department and in 1973 became purchasing supervisor. She truly loved working at J.L. Hammet and made many lifelong friends there.
Marie also loved spending time – especially during the holidays and on birthdays - with family and special friends. Christmas was not complete at the Goepfert home unless you got into a political debate with Aunt Marie while sharing a Manhattan! Marie had a strength about her and unwavering patriotism to her country. She also had a special warmth that touched many people.
Marie was predeceased by her parents, a sister, Elizabeth Bachman, a brother, Joseph Goepfert and nephews, Dennis Bachman and Glenn Goepfert.
Marie is survived by her niece, Donna Lee and her husband, Rick, and adored great-nephew, Kevin Lee, and sister-in-law, Stefania Goepfert. She is also survived by her niece, Susan Bachman, and her two great-nieces, Jennifer Lachowsky and Elizabeth Yanik. She will be greatly missed by her family and dear friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Friday, March 14 from 1:00-4:00 PM at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Avenue, Union, New Jersey.
