Michael was a retired Irvington Police Officer and then later, Commander of the Essex/Union Auto Theft Task Force. Michael was born in Newark, NJ on December 3, 1960 and resided in Irvington until moving to Union County. Michael’s greatest passion was chasing and catching stolen cars and he was the best at what he did.
He loved to play his bass guitar in his bands The Poprods, The Unitz, and The Barflys. He was extremely talented when it came to singing, especially Frank Sinatra.
He is survived by his mother, Ann McCarty, sister, Jeanne Leary and her husband Richard, Josephine Mellilo, whom he shared his two prized possesions, his beautiful daughters, who were also his devoted caretakers and were by his side until the very end, Danielle Decker and her husband Ryan, and Jennifer Mellilo and her boyfriend Bryan Crowell, along with many neices, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be Friday October 23, from 4-8pm at McCracken funeral home, 1500 Morris Avenue, Union, with a funeral service following at 8:00 pm. There will be a private cremation.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Michael’s memory to the 9/11 victims compensation fund.
