OBITUARY

Patricia A. Mahon

November 10, 1956May 20, 2020

Patricia Ann Mahon (nee Zaleski) of Union peacefully passed away on May 20, 2020 surrounded by immense love. She was 63. Pat was born on November 10, 1956 to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene and Helen (nee Grzegorzewska) Zaleski. She was raised in Clifton, NJ and attended Catholic schooling for the entirety of her education. She was a devout Catholic and follower of Christ, and was a parishioner of Holy Spirit Church in Union. She graduated from Felician College with a BA in Education and later obtained her Master’s Degree in Education. Pat was an inspirational educator for 35 years, 31 of which she spent molding the minds of the children of the Elizabeth Public School District as a middle school math teacher. She brought endless energy to her classroom, and cared deeply about every last one of the thousands of students that she taught. Her lessons were not just academic; she dedicated her time to making sure her students learned to be kind to others and also to themselves.

Pat was a very talented artist and dancer. She was a halftime dancer for the New York Giants in the early 80’s (despite being an enthusiastic Dallas Cowboys fan). She enjoyed drawing, attending Broadway shows, decorating for holidays and events, and above all, spending time with her daughter, Danielle. Danielle was Pat’s proudest accomplishment and the love she had for her was evident to all of those around her. She spread love everywhere she went and continually put others before herself. She was a second mom to many of Danielle’s friends and was affectionately known as “Mama Mahon.” She was a special friend to many, and will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Pat was predeceased by her parents, Helen and Eugene Zaleski, brother, Kenneth Zaleski, sister-in-law, Fara Zaleski, nephew, Kevin Zaleski, and brother-in-law, Michael Mahon. She is survived by her loving daughter, Danielle Mahon, husband, John Mahon Jr., nephew, Justin Zaleski, and niece, Morgan Hilliard (nee Zaleski). She was also the Great Aunt to Jaiden and Jania Zaleski, and Kloe, Adalynn, Lillian, and Brody Hilliard. She will additionally be missed by her beloved fur-babies, Tanner and Aspen.

Pat was an extremely generous person, and donated to countless charities. The family asks that she be honored by making a donation to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in her name, in lieu of flowers.

Ms. Mahon was a blessing in my life. She was an ace teacher with a golden soul and a contagious smile. She radiated her brilliant personality and filled her classrooms with love and care. There was not a moment of the day where she did not work and strive to make sure each and every single one of her students walked out learning at least five new things. Personally, aside from mathematics, she sat down and helped me develop social skills. She helped me find ways to cope with my anxiety, stress and anger.

Her lessons will stay with me for the rest of my life. What she has taught me will also, undoubtedly, help another in their journey through life.

Death leaves a pain that nobody can heal, but the love leaves memories that nobody can steal. <3

My condolences to Mrs. Mahon’s family. I was one of her students back in middle school (over 15 years ago) and I remember her so clearly. I loved her as a teacher because she really did care for us and would sit with us individually if we didn’t understand a topic. She is the reason I feel in love with math , she had a gift for teaching . <3

Sending Love and condolences to the Mahon Family, Mrs. Mahon was my favorite teacher in middle school and it saddens me to learn of her passing. She was the best at what she did and taught us how to be great and confident in ourselves. I love her and may she rest in peace. Much love from the Alexander Hamilton Middle School class of 03

Ms. Mahon was unlike any teacher I have ever had. She filled rooms with not only knowledge, but she entered with laughter and brought joy. She was one of those teachers that truly believed in you and wanted the best for her students. She was super dedicated and did far beyond than just teach. She impacted people. One time we went to NY on a school field trip and I didn't bring any money, and she bought me a bracelet. It really meant a lot. I would always come to her for advice and just bother her throughout the day. She really holds a special place in my heart and has impacted my life forever. I'm truly grateful to have gotten to know this soul, even if it was for a short period of time. She was that teacher that I always would bring up because she was always so special to me. She would always talk about her daughter and how much she loved her. Her motherliness was really seen through the way she treated her kids. There's no words to describe how truly incredible she was. I love you and my condolences to her family. Heaven really gained an angel though!

Amazing 7th grade teacher, forever in your gratitude. More than just a teacher, a true friend. Taught me there was more to school than just academics. I remember you telling me that you actually excelled in English and struggled in math. But you overtook math because you wanted a challenge and to help the future understand the subject. With you I now excel in math, and you have played a great part in my passion and the career I chose to pursue. Rest easy now, much love and prayers to you and everyone in your family. <3

Mrs. Mahon was one of the best teachers I ever had, the type of teacher that when she'd walk into a room it would light up with laughter. I just had a dream last night where I went back to 26 and visited all the teachers especially you! She always told me she saw something in me, that meant the world to me in 7th grade and now means 10x more. She always lead by example and did what she thought was right!

As you wanted I was originally going to send flowers, but I donated $100 Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in your memory. Thank you for everything you thought me Rest In Peace.

Ms. Mahon was one of the sweetest teachers I've ever met its so crazy to me to think that I can no longer visit her after quarantine and see her great smile in a classroom. No matter the circumstances or the problem Ms. Mahon always had my back and took care of me with a smile, open arms saying "There's my Rosie!". She loved to talk I remember always going on and on about life and how to live it and even to this day her words still stick with me. May she rest in peace as she truly deserved the happiness and joy of the world. Love you Ms. Mahon condolences to her family and friends for the void you left is irreplaceable. 💞

Pat and I go back to when we were 15-16 working at Alexander's Department store in Paramus NJ. We had a lot of growing up during those years. In all the years that followed we lost touch and reconnected so many times. But one thing stayed the same, our friendship. We had reconnected the last 6 years and would call and text all the time. I just always loved hearing how proud she was of her daughter Danielle. I will miss my dear friend. Love you dear Ring-a-ding. Until we meet again.
