Richard was raised in Irvington, NJ and graduated from Irvington High School in 1964 before moving to Union, his home of 47 years.
Richard spent his life in service to others. He was a proud veteran of the military having served active duty in Korea during the Vietnam Conflict as a SSGT in the United States Air Force. Following the Air Force, he joined the Township of Union Police Department where he proudly served a 25-year career as a Detective and Sergeant, retiring in 1998. He remained connected with the veteran community in his retirement serving as Quartermaster of the VFW Center #2230 in Kenilworth and a member of the ELKS #2004.
From a very young age he had a passion for outdoor activities. His fondest memories were the camaraderie of hunting with family and friends, whether it was in the fields with his dogs or a tree stand. He never missed a year of hunting season. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, billiards and was always ready to join a team sport. As a young man, he always loved dirt bike racing and cars which led to his work as a Body and Fender mechanic. He restored and owned many Corvettes. He was a classic car enthusiast and was an original member of the Galloping Hill Cruisers. His last project was restoring a ‘55 Chevy BelAir. Richard’s memory will live on through his love for his family and devotion to his friends. He was a generous friend to many, always ready to lend a helping hand or have a good laugh. All who knew him will remember his sense of humor. A true extrovert, he was happiest when surrounded by others.
Richard is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Linda Kitchell Banks, daughter Lauren Simone (Joseph), sister Madelyn Grote (Dennis), brother-in-law Joseph Kitchell (Mary), nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He is predeceased by his loving son, Richard Banks, Jr. and parents, Percy and Esmeralda Banks.
A Celebration of a Life well lived will be held September 28, 2025, 2pm - 6pm at the VFW, 33 S 21st St, Kenilworth, NJ 07033.
