"Life is such a gift...I have no sentiment as strong as gratitude...but faith is an equal gift, most particularly the faith to believe unconditionally that one's life, everyone's life, is ultimately in the hands of a loving God." - Cardinal John J O'Connor
William Edward Grant, Esq. 77 years, died peacefully on July 21, 2025. A New Jersey native, Bill's addresses included Union, Spring Lake and Lavallette. He was a graduate of Roselle Catholic High School, St. Bernard College, Alabama (1969), Memphis State University School of Law (1972), and practiced law for over 45 years. Like two peas in a pod, Bill was married to the love of his life, Maryellen Naughton Grant. They navigated life together for 47 years.
In his early years he enjoyed holidays and family vacations at his mother's family farm in Syracuse, New York surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins. For many years he kept a weekly dinner date at Joe's in Union accompanied by life-long friend, Father Chuck. Bill was a history and travel buff and if you were energized enough to travel internationally with him, you were swept up in all there was to see with your own private tour guide. Bill was welcoming, generous and born to serve. At endless family Christmases, he was the consummate host and chef of the most delicious stuffing. An oxymoron, Bill was the gentlest of souls with the strongest opinions and a true definition of "make haste slowly." Dog lover, avid reader, sci-fi/action movie fan and home improvement enthusiast, Bill always demonstrated a purposeful, endearing calm. And he had a trunk full of memorabilia and stories that he delightfully shared with all. His tall, reliable, quiet presence will truly be missed. Bill will remain a treasured, memorable gift from God.
Bill was predeceased by parents Dr. & Mrs. William Grant. Survived by his wife and best friend, Maryellen Naughton Grant, sisters: Mary Lou Healy, Sally Conan, Sherry Tancredi, dearest life-long friend Father Chuck McDermott, brother-in-law, Edward Naughton (Geraldine), sisters-in-law: Madonna LaPorta (Donald), Rosemary Naughton, Marita Rea, and many, many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for William will be held Saturday, July 26, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave, Union, NJ 07083. A funeral will occur Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 971 Suburban Rd, Union, NJ 07083. A graveside service will immediately follow at Hollywood Memorial Park, 1500 Stuyvesant Ave., Union, NJ 07083. Repass to be announced.
