Barbara Darlé Vigil of Upland, California, passed away quietly in her home on May 21, 2018. Barbara was born on March 24, 1927, in Los Angeles, California to Neil and Jessie Whitney. She graduated from Huntington Park High School and went on to attend Woodbury College where she met her husband, Toby Vigil, and they were married on May 7, 1946.
Barbara was especially proud of her "Scottish Blood" through her Mother's McFarland ancestors who came to this land. She was equally proud of her pioneer heritage on her Mother's side and her "cowboy" western heritage on her Father's side, as well as the fact that her Great Grandmother Davidson walked the pioneer trail as a child clear to Oregon.
Barbara was very patriotic. She took great pride in being an American and what our country stands for, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, and Freedom from persecution.
Barbara was interested in art from a very early age, ie: drawing, fashion designing, etc. She loved to visit art galleries and museums. She attended the art school, Woodbury College, where she met her future husband. She helped put her husband though Chiropractic College and then concentrated on raising her family.
Barbara's father was an avid fisherman. This is a trait he passed on to all of his grandsons, and they are passing on to their children. She grew up on the then empty beaches of Southern California as the family camped out her Dad and Uncle Ray fished.
As a young wife, she made most of her clothes and her girl’s clothes. You couldn't tell they were homemade because of the designing classes she took in art school. Barbara was a reader from a very young age and this continued through her life until her passing. You could always find her sitting in her recliner with a book in her hand. We tried to switch her over to using a "Kindle", but she found that a bit confusing and preferred the feel of a book in her hands.
Barbara didn't make close friends easily and cherished the ones she had. She loved going on vacation with her friends and getting together with them to play games, dominoes becoming a favorite. It was a sad day when she could no longer hear well enough to speak with them on the phone.
Barbara loved her family fiercely! Her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren never doubted for a moment that she loved them. She always had time to visit and talk with them. She will be missed greatly by all of them. The most precious gift Barbara had, was being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints which gave her, her testimony in the Savior, Jesus Christ, and sealed her forever for time and eternity to her family. Families Are Forever.
Barbara is survived by her sister Gerri Whitney Hampton, her brother Steven Whitney, her children Kurt Vigil, April Vigil Winkle, Barbara Vigil Goodsell, Adam Vigil, her nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is preceded by her husband Toby Vigil, her sons, Mark Vigil and Brant Matthew Vigil, and her parents, Neil and Jessie Whitney.
