I have no words to express what I'm feeling.  I am still processing and  still just going through the motions as I have been over the last two months. My head is still foggy and my heart deeply aches. Cal, you were always bigger than life and willing to do anything.  I am grateful you were always there for my children, and my sister, when we couldn't be. Sharon, rest assured he has not, nor ever will, leave your side. I'm glad I was privileged to be by your side when our Lord's angels carried you gently into God's loving arms.

Dad, we held so many memories together. You taught me so much. Each memory is close to my heart and will be part of me for the rest of my life. With everyday I wake I know I am another day closer to meeting you once again in eternal life. I will live the rest of my life in remeberance of you and the way you carried yourself as a father and husband as a friend and as a man who thought of others. When I think of you, you made me very proud that I was lucky enough to call you my father. Now it is my turn to make you proud. I love you forever dad and we will meet again.

You were always there, and we could always count on you growing up. Almost every kid my age owes his first job to you taking a chance on them. You will always be loved and never be forgotten.

 You were always there and worked so hard your entire life. I will always remember Christmas time at your house with an amazing tree decorated to the max and a great meal waiting for us. Rest in peace uncle Cal.

It was a pleasure growing up with you my friend . You were someone my family could always depend on. Whenever you are in trouble just " call Uncle Cal'!! Rest in peace my friend.

Silver Lining

Where joy hides in the shadows of my sorrow and prayers sleep deep beneath the earth it is there that I find you.  Love taught me a valuable lesson that it knows not its own strength, it knows not its own depth until the time of separation.  Love taught me that disappointment and bitterness doesn't matter in the final hour.  Only love matters.  Only love occupies the space between us now.  Quiet memories as silent as the acts of service you covered me with as a child, whisper their sweet breath in my ear.  Simple memories of holding your hand, hearing your laughter, sharing in a simple smile, walking silently side by side plants itself as a seed of hope in the soil of despair that has filled my heart.  You are what my mind misses and my heart waits for again.
  
Your greatest gift to me was the bright and beautiful light of your children, my brothers and sister.  Their light brings the darkness to its knees.  The seed of hope is what your love gave to us and left with us to share and spread in the world; so that through us the world may know your beautiful spirit, a love that does, as naturally as taking a breath, and as humbly as a well kept secret. It will be my privilege and responsibility to share your light and your message that love does and give it away in a simple gesture, a kind word, a loving embrace, a smile.
  
Today I am going to cry, my tears are for myself and my joy is for your peace and the love that surrounds you and keeps you company.  Tomorrow, when it comes, I will remember to tend to the seed of hope, to let your light breath its lovely fragrance into the world through my spirit. It is said that from the depths of darkness we can soar to new and greater heights of joy.  While there will always be a longing to know you- to hold your hand, to hear your laughter, to walk silently side by side, to feel your kiss against my cheek- tomorrow will bring with it a longing to share your light with the world and joy will lift from the shadows and my prayers will awaken and rise again.  I love you dad.

     Those special memories of you will always bring a smile.  If only, I could have you back for just a little while...
     Then we could sit and talk again just like we used to do.  You always meant so very much and always will, too.
     The fact that you're no longer here will always cause me pain, but your forever in my heart until we meet again.

Memories are a treasure to be shared for years to come, to help keep loved ones near, to learn of generations past, a guiding hand when troubled.
Memories are what we have left when a loved one passes on, they help us know we are not alone and that we are loved.
Memories help us through the loss, to show us there are others who care, who know what we are feeling, to help ease the soul that is pained.

Dad, Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday.  Missing you is the heartache that never goes away.

I have many memories of my dad and I do cherish each and everyone. He has been a wonderful influence in my life and I will miss him dearly.  I know that you are in a better place, but it will always be hard for me when those special times come and you are not here to share those with us.  I do know that your spirit will always be near. I love you and will miss you!

It is with much sadness that I find myself sharing these thoughts. I had the pleasure to prepare and deliver your eulogy. It was wonderful to speak with friends and family members to share stories about our lives spent with you. It was pretty interesting to learn about the details of your life. I will eternally be grateful for this opportunity. 

Thank you Dad for your everlasting example of being a true Christian. The constant unconditional love that you shared with so many is a trait that I will strive to continue on your behalf. I pray you find as much joy in your new life's work as you did here on earth.

Words of Remembrance 
Calvin Lodge Scott Sr.
May 4th, 2015

I am Jim, many of you may know me better as Jimmy, Cal's son. 
I am honored to be able to share with you today a brief remembrance of our beloved dad, grandfather, uncle, friend, brother, and husband Calvin Lodge Scott Sr. and his life. 
Dad was born on June 22, 1940 in Oakland, CA to his Mother Elsie May Lodge and his Father Calvin Edward Scott Jr. He has an older Sister, Dorothy. 
Around the age of 4 the Scott family purchased an 80 acre lot of land in San Martin, which is located just south of the Morgan Hill area in Santa Clara County. Here the family began to build their homestead. During the first couple of years they started with an outhouse, chicken coops, an outside oven, and other necessities for their family and animals, which included chickens, horses and pigs. 
This area was very rural; Dad tended to wander away from their land and was brought home several times by the local Sheriff. When Elsie was doing laundry and hanging it on the clothesline, she would fasten a rope to Dad and attach the other end to the clothesline to keep him from wandering off. As a child Dad was very close to his Mom, they had a very special relationship. I am sure they are enjoying their time together now laughing about these stories and memories. 
It took the family about 2 years to get electricity to their land and a home built that they could live in. 
One of Dad's favorite memories of this farm life was his pig named Dorothy. He thought it was pretty funny that he could name his pig after his Sister. 
Dad lived on this farm for many years. Around the age of 7 Dad's Grandpa (Calvin Edward Scott Sr.) moved in, he would pay him and Dorothy .15 cents for every #10 can of berries they picked. 
In 1950, Dad's Father passed away when he was 10 years old. He had to miss school a lot to help keep things on the farm working. This experience was where Dad started learning about hard work and helping others. 
When Dad was a teenager Elsie moved the family to Modesto where Dad attended and graduated from Downey High School. During his years in high school Dad was the school Treasurer / Accountant. After graduation the Dean of Boys wrote Dad a Letter of Recommendation. When he presented this letter to Dad, he told him that in his tenure as Dean he hadn't granted many letters of recommendation and that he considered Dad to be an outstanding individual. 
After high school Dad took a job working at the Standard Oil Service Station in Yosemite. Dad loved El Capitan and the beauty of Yosemite. 
One day while Dad was working in Yosemite Delton Pebbler, the man that was courting Elsie drove all the way to the service station in for a chat. Delton respected Dad and wanted to honor him by asking his permission to marry his Mother.   
In March of 1961 Dad married Sheila Lingschied. They had 4 children Calvin Lodge Jr., Cathy, myself, and Del. 
Shortly after their marriage, Dad joined the Coast Guard. Much like his Father and Grand Father; Dad had a love for his country and wanted to serve. He served in the Coast Guard for 10 years as a cook. During which time he was stationed in a number of places including the Philippines, Alameda, Yerba Buena (better known as Treasure Island), Guam, Yap Island (which is located near Guam), and a few other locations. 
During his service in the Coast Guard Dad treasured the time that he could be home with his kids. However, after leaving the Coast Guard his marriage to Sheila ended. 
Besides being a cook Dad found a career in bowling. He managed a number of bowling alleys and was very successful and well respected. It started with the Futurama Bowl in Santa Clara where he was the Asst. Manager. 
It was here at the Futurama that Dad met the true love of his life Sharon Mendolarie. She was the secretary of a bowling league. Whenever she was working, Dad always seemed to be present. They met a few times for drinks after work until that first real date. They went to a little restaurant in the south bay where they sat and talked for 3 hours. They both realized that there was a strong connection right away and were soon married on Jan 6th 1973. 
Dad and Mom lived in Alameda where he managed Mel's Bowl. Dad loved to bring Cathy to work with him and have her help him with his work. Within a couple of years the company was asking Dad to move to L.A to open a new bowling alley for them. Dad and Mom told them they didn't want to live in Southern California; there were too many people and too much traffic. So they took a position in Clovis (near Fresno) where Dad managed Rodeo Lanes. 
They lived in Clovis for 10 years until that wonderful day when Jason and Shanna joined their family. The family lived in Clovis for another 5 years. They then moved to Vallejo to be closer to family and help Aunt Debbie get her restaurant started. 
While in Vallejo Dad was very involved in school events with the kids, church, sports, and he had a lot of opportunities to manage different restaurants and was blessed to know a lot of people around the community. 
He was a committed and strived hard not to miss an event for the kids. While working at iHop he would leave for a few hours to watch the kids and the employees would say Running to the bank again, in China. They knew he loved the kids and that transferred into how he felt for them not as employees, but as important people in his life. 
You may have noticed that I have referred to the the kids a few times. When Mom and Dad moved to Vallejo they didn't realize it but they were melding their family with the Lopez family. Debbie (Sharon's sister) and Julio have 3 wonderful children Crystal, Annemarie, and Nick. Add Jason and Shanna to this mix and you have a calendar full of activities. 
These kids kept Dad busy 
•5 am trips to Burger King while on their way to a sporting event
•Trips back and forth from practice
•A quick stop at the donut shop before a ball game
•Forgotten homework
•Watching wrestling on TV  and demonstrating wrestling moves during commercials
•Many games spent at Candlestick in the freezing cold
•Home cooked dinners every night
He was there! He was there without a complaint in the world. He sacrificed a lot to make every person's life better to make them feel that they were important. Dad was the kind of guy that you could have one conversation with and leave feeling that you were BFF's. 
In Dad's final chapter of life and since his passing on April 22, 2015 we have learned of so many people's lives that he has touched while here in Southern California. Just around the complex he lived, so many people have come up to Mom to show their gratitude for Dad's friendship. Many of these people Mom didn't even really know. But this was just who Dad was, constantly serving others and doing it without the need for recognition. 
In closing I would like to share this memory I have of who Dad was. It's important to know that growing up I attended a different church than the Catholic Church, Dad didn't know much about the church I attended and it's beliefs.
I remember this conversation that Dad and I had, just after Tami and I were married. Tami and I were very young. She was 18 and I was 20 when we were married. Dad realized that I was starting on my own life's journey with a wife and family. He wanted to make sure I was okay. During a visit to Mom and Dads in Vallejo Dad asked me to step out to the front yard with him. 
There we are standing in the driveway and he looked at me with one of the most serious looks that I have seen from him. He simply asked Do you know Jesus Christ? Do you believe in his sacrifice and Atonement? Of course my answer was yes. Dad responded with a huge hug and simply Then that is enough for me!  
This was the simplest testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ that I have ever received. I know that Dad knew and loved his Savior and that was enough. He was not a man of many spiritual words, but his acts were much louder than words could ever be. 
The endless service Dad gave to his family and those around him emulate the example that Christ gave us. If each of us can strive to give service to those around us, as Dad did, we too will have a glimmer of the joy that this life can bring. Dad knew this joy!

It's hard to believe you are gone pops! I will always have the fond memories of playing canasta, pinochle, and euchre with you! You were an incredible man and I know you are now smiling down on us from heaven! Until we meet again RIP friend!

Calvin you were an Awesome man.  It was a Pleasure to meet you and share meals with you.  You were one heck of a cook..  Sharon my heart hurts for you.  My Prayers will be with you even though I am so far away.

YOU KNOW MY HEART AND SPIRIT ARE WITH YOU EVEN THOUGH I AM PHYSICALLY SO FAR AWAY. I REMEMBER EATING PIZZA OR CAL ON THE GRILL JUST HANGING OUT. YOU, CAL, JUDY AND ME. I MISS THOSE DAYS. LOVE YOU!

Cal, I'm so very blessed to have met you through your lovely daughter & my dearest friend Shanna. I know your last days with us were beyond difficult for you & your family. You demonstrated such courage & so did they. I know you're resting peacefully now & your family will continue to honor all of the lovely memories you have provided us. Shanna & Sharon, if you need anything... Don't hesitate to call.

I will miss Cal very much.  I will send you love and healing energy every day. He was your husband your friend and the love of you life. You have strong faith and your family to help you with your loss. All my love not in a weird way.

We met Cal about 20 years or more ago    We were at a baseball game and the Scott's family and the Bowers family were both looking for our daughters .   We both said Shanna , and we looked at each other and and laughed,  Both girls turned around and since that day we have been the best of friends.  Our prayers are going out to our friends Sharon, Shanna Jason  grandkids and family's   GOD  blessed us all with the love Cal gave to everyone he met.  Thank you LORD  for giving Us the Bowers family the opportunity to know and LOVE Cal
