Cornelius Shephard, 72 of Stockton, CA formerly of Pomona, surrounded by his loving family passed away on December 7, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. Cornelius was born in Shreveport, LA and moved to Hooks, TX at the age of 10. He joined the United States Navy in 1959 upon graduation from Hooks High School and served on the the destroyer, The USS Chevalier from June 1958 until July 28, 1960. Cornelius worked at Lanterman State Hospital in Pomona, CA, from 1961 to 1973. After which he joined the California Department of Corrections in 1973, starting his career at the California Institution for Men and promoting to the rank of Correctional Captain. In 1989 he promoted to the rank of Associate Warden at Pelican Bay State Prison and in 1995 achieved rank of Chief Deputy Warden at the Northern California Women's Facility. Cornelius retired in 2000 after 39 years of outstanding state service. Cornelius was passionate about his hobbies which consisted of traveling the United States, fishing any lakes he could find, growing the biggest tomatoes in his garden and watching old western's. He adored his family with all his heart and was a very proud Husband, Father, and Grandfather.
Cornelius is survived by his loving wife Joanna of 44 years and 3 children, Carey Shephard of Upland, CA, Christina Latimore (Emanuel) of Stockton, CA, and Marc Shephard of Kingwood, TX and 6 grandchildren, Sylvia, Tiara, Marcus, Nathann, Jordan and Jalyn. Sister, Ann Hubbard (Carlton) of Hooks, TX and Brother Roy Shephard of Texarkana, TX. He is preceded in death by his Mother , Ruby Parish.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Stone Funeral Home, 355 E. 9th Street, Upland, CA 91786. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario. www.stonefuneralhomeupland.com
